The track starts at Awa Awa Rata Reserve. From there, we followed a well-marked and well-established track to a steep side of the Mount Hutt Range. The bush up there is quite lovely. Soon, we hit Scotts Saddle Track, which led us along open ridges full of native brush to Mt Hutt Skifield Road. It looks kind of industrial here, just a wide rocky road on a rocky ridge winding up the mountain.
There is a marked turnoff from the road where Pudding Hill Stream Route starts. It’s just a steep track down to Pudding Hill. When we were there, the water level was pretty low, and the stream wasn’t even knee-deep for me. I’ve heard before that the stream could be an issue when in flood, but for us, with the low water level, it was very easy. We obviously had to cross the stream many times over, but it felt like a Sunday afternoon walk. After about a couple of hours, we arrived at the bottom of Alder Track, which led us back to our car.
It’s quite a straightforward walk. I may try to come back with my kid, and we could go along Alder Track first and follow Pudding Hill Stream uphill. If you’ve never been in the area, I don’t think you’re missing too much.
