When tramping with small kids, it’s the journey that counts, not the destination. For this trip, both me and Miranda completely threw away all our ambitions and just decided to play it by ear. We both knew that it’s unlikely that we’d get all the way to Edwards hut, so we were prepared to camp along the way. We started at Greyneys Shelter. After kids had fun while crossing the river, we started climbing over a ridge that led us down to Edwards River. We walked just over 3 km and we decided to camp right there. We made a wee fire by a creek and had a great, chilled night full of stories and playing with rocks. In the evening, a whiō came to say hi. The day after, we walked back the same way.
I find that when tramping with kids, the less ambition a tramper has, the more enjoyable the trip is going to be.
